Germany thrash Scotland: Germany kicked off Euro 2024 with a 5:1 thumping of Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
The Germans buoyed by the return of veteran Toni Kroos opened the scoring through young superstar Florian Wirtz. His strike was too precise and too powerful for Angus Gunn in the Scotland goal.
Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala made it 2:0 in the 19th minute, powering a thunderous strike past Gunn after he was set up by Kai Havertz. Kai then scored the 3rd goal of the it game, converting from the spot after Porteous was sent shown a straight red for a reckless challenge on Ilkay Gundogan in the box. This put the Germans in a very comfortable position at halftime.
Both teams rang changes, but the game continued as it was in the first half. Substitute Niclas Fullkrug scored a belter to put Germany 4:0 up. He later had a goal disallowed for offside after being set-up by a cross from Mittelstadt on the left.
Scotland got a goal back in the 87th minute after Grant Hanley’s header bounced off Antonio Rudiger’s head and past a despairing Manuel Neuer. This prompted noise from the Scottish fans who had nothing to cheer about prior to the goal.
But Germany responded immediately, another substitute Emre Can finding the bottom corner from the edge of the box in added time to condemn Scotland to a 5:1 defeat.
The game was the first match in Euros history to see a red card, a penalty scored and an own goal scored. Germany will now turn their attention to Hungary who they face on 19th June, while Scotland will hope to bounce back when they face Switzerland on the same day.
